Deutz AG

The Deutz AG (or K löckner- H umboldt- D eutz AG - KHD ), is a German Industrie historical and pionnière in the construction of spark-ignition Engine. This company was founded in 1872 by the inventors of the Engine spark-ignition Nikolaus Otto and Gottlieb Daimler with Deutz (Cologne).

The company was separate in three divisions:

  • division farm equipment Deutz-Fahr, which will be yielded in 1995 to the Italian group Same,
  • division engine Deutz AG, specialist in the engine with air cooling but also manufacturer of engine with liquid cooling, whose Italian Same will hold 29,9% of the capital in July 2004 to become about it the principal shareholder with 42,2% of the capital today,
  • division manufacturer heavy trucks Magirus-Deutz as of 1949 and will be repurchased by Iveco in 1974 to become IVECO Magirus AG in 1983.

History

Invention of the internal combustion engine by Nikolas Otto

In 1867 the inventive Engineer Nikolaus Otto invents the Internal combustion engine and founds the company N.a. Otto and Co to manufacture it.

Foundation of Deutz AG with Gottlieb Daimler

In 1872 it is joined in its company by his/her friends Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach which invents with him the Engine spark-ignition (or " cycle of Otto ") on the basis of engine of the French inventor Alphonse Beau of Rochas. They deposit and exploit the Brevet Four-stroke engine in 1877 and found the industrial company " Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD, or Deutz AG) " with Deutz (Cologne) to 40 km in the south-east of Düsseldorf.

The Logo of the mark is initially that of the manufacturer Magirus with Ulm. It represents a great M for Magirus capped large Flèche of the Cathédrale of Ulm.

In 1882 Gottlieb Daimler leaves Deutz AG followed by Wilhelm Maybach to create a workshop of research independent to Stuttgart with the amount of the capital of its shares of Deutz AG. (It founds the company Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1890 which will become Mercedes-Benz in 1926)

Association with Ettore Bugatti

Of 1907 with 1908 Nikolaus Otto joins Ettore Bugatti to conceive the Bugatti Type 8 and Bugatti Type 9 without business success. (Ettore Bugatti founds its company Bugatti in 1909).

In 1911 Gustav Otto 28 years old, wire of Nikolaus Otto founds the company " Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrikun ", factory of engine of plane of which he is pioneer on the basis of engine invented by his father with Munich in Bavaria. (Its company becomes BMW the July 21st 1917 after fusion with the company " Rapp Motoren Werke " of Karl Rapp)

Fusion in Magirus-Deutz with Magirus

In 1936 " Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz " amalgamate with the manufacturer of Camion S Magirus of Conrad Dietrich Magirus and becomes Magirus-Deutz in 1949: industry fabricante of Truck S, Bus, Tractor S, Machine-pump etc. (with engines cooled by air).

In the Années 1970 Magirus-Deutz cooperates with the manufacturers DAF, Volvo and Saviem and becomes the second more important manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Germany.

In 1974 Magirus-Deutz is repurchased by the Italian group FIAT and following the reorganization of its sector Camion S, Magirus-Deutz AG becomes a subsidiary company of the group IVECO.

Fusion with IVECO in IVECO Magirus AG

In 1983 " Magirus-Deutz AG " becomes IVECO Magirus AG.

In 1989 " IVECO Magirus AG " celebrates its 125 years of existence.
