Deutschlandhalle

The Deutschlandhalle is a versatile room in charge of history. It is located in Berlin - Charlottenburg (Germany), directly beside the station of metropolitan railway ( S-Bahn ) Southern Messe (= southern exhibition site). It is out of steel and measurement 117 m length on 83 m of width. It can contain until 10  000  spectators. It is one of oldest in the world of this size.

It was inaugurated the November 29th 1935 in the presence of Adolf Hitler and was used for the first time at the time of the Olympic Games of Berlin in 1936. It had been conceived according to a project of the architects Franz Ohrtmann and Fritz Wiemer and had been carried out in nine months only.

During years 1930, it was especially the place of sporting events, spectacles and gatherings of mass of the party German National-Socialist (NSDAP) and of its organizations. The first week of the OJ of 1936 saw to proceed there the tests of Lutte and Haltérophilie and the second week those of Boxe.

In 1938, controls it celebrates Hanna Reitsch made there demonstrations in flight of the helicopter Focke-Wulf Fw 61 during the review (colonial exposure) Ki sweated heli . At the time of the spectacle Menschen-Tiere-Sensationen (of the men - animals - feelings) the equilibrist funambulist Camilla Mayer (of its true name Witte Burbot) killed in a fall following the rupture out of a mast the January 20th 1940.

The building was destroyed during a allied bombardment in January 1943. It was rebuilt after the Second world war and sheltered until 1957 of the spectacles like Holiday one Ice , Menschen, Tiere, Sensationen and British Tattoo . It was the prototype of the tournaments of Handball in room and one saw there memorable boxing matches with Mohammed Ali and other legends. In 1995, it was the place of the championship of Europe of tennis shoe (victory of Alba Berlin). It was more the big room of concert of West Berlin. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who and Jimi Hendrix played there like Herbert Grönemeyer and Gianna Nannini.

In 1997, the building was closed and the municipality of Berlin wanted to make it destroy because its restoration was too expensive. It however in spite of was very renovated and modernized and was reopened the August 15th 2001.

Deutschlandhalle has from now on a track of ice-skating of 30 × 60 m and platforms for 8764 spectators where the teams of hockey of Berlin and their supporteurs organize many meetings.

In 2005, it was again closed to remake the roof.

March 10th, 2006, it was reopened for the tournaments of hockey.

Within the framework of planning concerning the replacement of the ICC, it is again question of destroying Deutschlandhalle.
