Deutschland IV

The ship Deutschland of 1923, known like the Deutschland IV to distinguish it from the other of the same ships name, was a Transatlantique of the company HAPAG. It was cast during the same air raid that the Cape Arcona and the Thielbek May 3rd 1945.

The series of Deutschland had started with the '' Albert Ballin ''.

The Deutschland was launched the April 28th 1923. It carried out its inaugural cruising the March 27th 1924, of Southampton to New York. This boat had problems of tremor due to these vibrations, it took the nickname of “Cocktail Shaker”; it was remotorisé in 1929 with a cruising speed reduced to 19 node S.

In 1940, it became a ship-housing for the Kriegsmarine with Gotenhafen. In 1945, 7 passages, it transported 70.000 refugees of the Eastern Germany towards the West.

The May 3rd 1945, it was cast in bay of Lübeck to broad of Neustadt consequently attacks air British which ran the Cape Arcona and the Thielbek ; these the last two ships had been filled of deportees of 24 different nationalities (of which of the French) to be cast. Thousands of them died. Fortunately, none was on board the Deutschland and the crew had time to flee.

In 1948, its wreck was dismounted and shredded.
