Geography

History

The origins of our commune are badly known. The museums of Saverne and Strasbourg do not hold any found archaeological vestige with Dettwiller. Paul Gerber thinks that the site constituted an observation post of the Roman road which skirted the valley of Zorn on the other blank. He concerns with regular intervals other establishments: Hochfelden, Mommenheim. This Roman road which one would have found traces during the construction of the channel had been borrowed by the Julien Emperor into 356 to fight Alamans between Brumath and Strasbourg. The first inhabitants were installed on a headland which dominates the valley. This one did not have the same aspect as nowadays. It is necessary to probably think a river with several arms which looks for its way through a bottom of marshy valley in winter. This river was crossed by a ford where the valley was the least broad.

Dettwiller was to be with narrow on its hill and of the houses settled with the bottom of the escarpment: The street of the Butchers and part of the street of the High-Rise. A second belt was added with the street of the Station. Thereafter Dettwiller developed along the axes of communication. In direction of Wilwisheim, along the way of Saverne with Mommenheim, initially Dettwiller extended until the height from the Weil Garage. Wilhelm Krebs lived in 1746 close to Niederthor. Its property gives to the back on Wahl. On the cadrastal map of 1820, piece a lengthened, curved share of this place in direction of the street of the Gal Leclerc. Would Wahl be thus an old enclosure (wall, ditch, hedge?) or simply limit. The street of the Blacksmiths and the Trumpf lane serve this zone but stop before reaching this limit. In the South, the commune is bordered by the Dorfgrawe ditch. In a later phase Dettwiller continued its linear extension towards Wilwisheim. Towards Gottesheim existed a door similar to that stated previously. In the description of the properties of Dettwiller of 1746 one reads that Hans Jacob Wagner lived in the “Weingarthen gass beym obere Thor”. Weingarten being located behind the current cemetery, the way of Weingarten thus corresponds with the street of the Leclerc General. One of its neighbors Heinrich Persohn lives beside Dorfgraben what consolidates the interpretation of this lengthened piece. In direction of Zorn we find Zaberner Thor which was probably on Dorfgrawe. The extension towards Hattmatt has to begin with construction from the castle. In 1746 no dwelling is quoted in the description of the properties. On the plan of 1824, the small street of the Vosges (Ewerderfel) is already bordered of houses. Jacob Weltezer and Christina Bauerin built their house in 1822. vo600 In 1844, the streets are lit by oil lamps.
