The designer is a person charged to draw one or more Vêtement S (for then forming a collection).
The work of the designer
He works in team, with a Modéliste and Confectionneur S. He always draws his collection one year in advance, because it takes time to create it. For its creations, it can take as a starting point tables, photographs, cultures, buildings. It makes initially a choice of fabrics. To have fabric ideas, it can for example go to the French living room First Vision (living room gathering 90 % of the fabric manufacturers). Then, its fabrics chosen, it draws its clothing and after several tests, it can finish its Dessin. Its drawings will pass then between the hands of a model maker (who will transform them into 3D, and will make an owner, fittings) then between those of makers or machines.
Work conditions of the designer
This profession is generally exerted in residence or in the employer (undertaken clothes industry, of Prêt-à-porter, office of design, research department, industrial company, etc). The visits with the production units involve frequent displacements. The work hours often irregular and are conditioned by the delivery periods or the dates of trade events (ravelled, living rooms, etc). The activity implies a collaboration with the customers and the specialists in other sectors (ergonomicists, sociologists, data processing specialists, designers, model makers, specialists mercatic (marketing), engineers, etc). The recourse to the techniques of data-processing assistance (CAD) is in full rise.
Formation
There do not exist strictly defined conditions to reach this function. Many schools of arts have a section design . There exists also a specific training with the textile clothes industry, creation mode, seam and with the manufacture of costumes of spectacles. In the majority of the cases, the training alone does not guarantee the direct access at a station with responsibilities, one intermediate period of assistant is generally nécessaire.It should be known however that diploma are delivered by schools of mode. The diploma recognized by the state is the BTS desgn of mode. But for much of student it is more interesting to make a certificate of école.
