Deserted
The (Ilhas) Desertas are a group of 3 small islands belonging to the Archipel Portuguese of Madeira: Ilhéu Chão, Deserted Large and Bugio.
They are located at the south-east of the Madeira, from where one can see them without difficulty - the point nearest is bridged it of Sao Lourenço, distant of 11 km Ilhéu Chão, smaller and more septentrional of the islands. Bugio is most distant.
As their name indicates it, they are uninhabited and besides not very hospital because of their aridity and of difficult access because they are very escarpées.
Total surface area: 14 km ². The culminating point is to 479 m on the largest island: Grande deserted which is 13,5 km long on 2,4 km broad to the maximum. Ilhéu Chão culminates in 104 m and Bugio with 411 Mr.
Their access is allowed only on special permit, which is delivered in theory only with the scientists who have a small station to with it.
Indeed these islands shelter in particular colonies of Phoque S as well as an extremely rare race of Tarentule. The islands are protected since 1990 and constitute a natural reserve since 1995.
