Descent of Louis XIV
Legitimate children of Louis XIV
Louis XIV had six children with his legitimate wife, Marie-Therese of Austria (1638-1683):
Only the first reached the adulthood. It had itself three children:
-
Louis (August 6th 1682 † February 19th 1712), duke of Burgundy;
- Philippe (December 19th 1683 † July 9th 1746), duke of Anjou, then king d' Espagne under the name of Philippe V;
- Charles (July 31st 1686 † May 5th 1714), duke of Berry.
Louis XV (1710 - 1774), which was to succeed Louis XIV, was only the third wire of the duke of Burgundy, the second, Louis de France (1707-1712), titrated duke of Brittany, having died a few days after his/her father. He was thus the great-grandson of Louis XIV.
Natural children of Louis XIV
Louis XIV had sixteen or seventeen natural children (known as formerly bastard) known, of which eights were legitimated and six reached the adulthood. It had as a policy to marry them in the side branches of the house of Bourbon: Bourbon-cop, Bourbon-Conti, Orleans, not without causing sharp resistances of the interested parties. The aim in view was not only to ensure bastard satisfactory position at the court, but especially to lower the branches juniors, which was the constant policy of a monarch who had never forgotten the lessons of the Fronde.
This policy was however to make the fortune of the house of Orleans. Indeed, none of the nine children of the duke of Maine not having had a posterity, it is the duke of Chartres, future Philippe-Equality, which collected, by its marriage with Adélaïde de Penthièvre, girl of the duke of Penthièvre, only sons of the count de Toulouse, the colossal heritage of legitimated.
