Derby of Epsom

the Derby of Epsom is a table of Theodore Géricault, impassioned horses.

This work holds the attention by its lack of realism. Indeed, the horses seem to float in the airs. As if it were about a stylized dance, the horses all are represented during the time of suspension of their gallop.

On the other hand, and this discovery was made only subsequently to the table and thanks to photography, we know now that the horses never have at the same time the four tended legs. It is this detail which makes say that the table is not realistic, in spite of the meticulous care taken to the drawing.
