Departments of Haiti

Haiti is divided into ten departments . Each department is subdivided in districts. These departments draw their origin from the three “provinces” of colonial Saint-Domingue, that is to say North, the South, and the West. Under All Saints' day Louverture, the provinces become departments, which themselves were cut out in new departments with the passing of years.

Department of the Artibonite (1)

Geographical division

The department of Artibonite is divided into 5 Arrondissements and 15 Communes :

  • the Gully-with-Grass snake : place of the famous combat between All Saints' day Louverture and the French troops ordered by Rochambeau.
  • Small-River-in-the Artibonite : place or Henry Christophe built his Palate with the 365 doors.
  • Peak-with-Pierrot : place of glorious fierce combats between the indigenous troops and the French troops.
  • the Dwelling Georges : place of the arrest of All Saints' day Louverture.
  • Dessalines ( Commercial ): Capital of the first Empire
  • With the Old Vat : place close to Large-Saltworks where All Saints' day Louverture beat the Colonel Brisbane in December 1794.

  • Cape-Haitian : founded in 1670 per Bertrand d' Orgeron and called Paris of Saint-Domingue.
  • Bréda , High-of-Cape : birthplace of All Saints' day Louverture
  • Vertières : Site of the Heroes of independence. Jean-Jacques Dessalines gained the victory définitve there known French, on November 18th, 1803.
  • the Citadel Christophe : on the top of Bonnet-with-LÉvêque, of King Henri Ist
  • Milot is the brilliant work: place of residence preferred of Henri Christophe (with the foot of the Citadel).
