Departmental records of Ille-et-Vilaine
The Departmental records of Ille-et-Vilaine are at the same time the Public records department of Ille-et-Vilaine and the service of the General advice of Ille-et-Vilaine in charge of their conservation, increase and availability of the public.
Including/understanding the files of the Parliament, intendance, States from Brittany and other institutions with the regional spring, the historical interest of these funds exceeds considerably the geographical framework of the department; its frequentation by the public is among most important of France partly because of the universities existing with Rennes.
History of the files of the department
For a good knowledge of the Files, the principal reference marks concerning their progressive constitution are listed below whose name of the Archiviste S having directed them and that one frequently finds like persons in charge of inventories and other publications historical.-
1790 - Until now dispersed in the town of Rennes, the first files of the Ancien Mode are stored in the palate of the Parliament; files of the intendance and files of the states of Brittany join the legal files.
- 1792 - Alexandre Duval Pineu, ex-clerk clerk of the states, is " agent-archiviste" department; the first two inventories of the files will have been carried out at the end of its mission in messidor year II.
- Year II - Pursuant to the law of the 7 messidor year II, Alexandre Duval Pineu accepted the function of " employee with the triage". With its voluntary assistances, he works until in brumaire year V, the law of the 5 of this month indirectly stopping the massive elimination which was committed, after the solemn destruction of the titles of the Réformation of the nobility in August 1792.
- Year IV - Jean-François Estin, old Prior of the abbey of Marmoutier of Turns, is named archivist of the department , after having been archivist of the District of Rennes; he resigns in frimaire year VI for handicap.
- 1800 - the files gradually occupy ten rooms of the Parliament, but the already considerable disorder still increases when the law of the 28 pluviôse year VIII and the later provisions entrust the main role to the secretariat of the Préfecture.
- 1820 - Hyacinthe Trublet is archivist of the prefecture until in 1837, date on which the general advice stops the archivist salary.
- 1837 - Charles Jacques Pépin, alias Pip of Bourges, is assistant manager of prefecture , charged with the files; foreground of classification…
- 1838 - Law of May 10th, 1838
- 1853 - Edouard Quesnet is named " archivist of the département" by the Prefect; he is tested and satisfied the conditions of the decree of February 4th 1850 as for the capacities of the archivists. The result of its activity will resemble of nothing that of its predecessors: the order carried it on the disorder and of new payments took place.
- 1870 - the palate of the Parliament is less and less specific as well to the conservation of the files for lack of place as by overload of the building and the files are again dispersed while waiting for the construction of a building.
- 1885 - Removal of the files in the building - Holy hotel Melaine - built with the back of the hotel of the prefecture, close to the park of Thabor.
- 1890 - Honore of public distinctions, Edouard Quesnet dies on September 12th; Paul Parfouru, former student of the School of the charters, is named like successor. He will be assisted of a second assistance-archivist three years later.
- 1905 - Nomination d'André Lesort.
- 1912 - Nomination of Henri Boob of Rogerie, coming from the Departmental records of the Finistere.
- 1934 - Nomination of René Gandilhon which extremely finds files with narrow so much in the house of Borderie (Saint-Melaine place) that with the law courts .
- 1941 - Nomination of Henri-François Dresser; it will be as from 1967 the preserving first as a chief for the area.
- 1965 - Publication of the first Guide of the Files of Ille-et-Vilaine .
- 1968 - Meeting and removal in the building set up street Jules Ferry of the files still dispersed since the Second world war; they occupy already nearly the two-thirds of the 29.000 meters linear available. The room of roomy reading, located on the 7th floor, contributes to the continuous increase in public.
- 1973 - Entry according to Jacques Charpy, director of the Departmental records of Finistere since 1959.
- 1980 - Opening of the series W (law of December 31st, 1979) for the posterior files with 1940.
- 1983 - Beginning of the Indexing using computers.
- 1986 - the Departmental records become a service of the general advice, the wages of part of the personnel remaining ensured by the State.
- 1992 - Michel Maréchal notes on its arrival that the efforts of its predecessors as regards acquisition already led the building of 1968 to its limits, in spite of eliminations. Being attached to remedy this situation, it is under its impulse that will be built the new building in the north of the city in 2005.
- 1994 - Publication of new the Guides of the Departmental records of Ille-et-Vilaine (from which the essence of preceding information is drawn, themselves joined together by Jacques Charpy).
- 2006 - Closing on June 30th of the deposit located street Jules Ferry for removal of the files in the new building.
- 2007 - Fine of the removal; opening in June of the new building (1 rue Jacques Léonard) inaugurated the 22.
If one does not take account of the destruction " officielles" French revolution, three facts historical had a particular consequence on the integrity of the files of the department.
- the fire of Rennes in 1720 destroyed the files of the Présidial of Rennes until this date; its spring extended on a great number of parishes partly out of the current department.
- the Chouannerie and the disorders related on the Revolution and the counter-revolution involved destruction of files in the town halls of the area of Fougères.
- bombardments of Saint-Malo in 1943? caused the destruction of a great quantity of various files (civil statue, justice,…).
