Department of the War of the United States

The department of the War of the United States ( United States Department off War ) was a department of the executive branch of the government of the the United States which was responsible for the operations and the maintenance of the terrestrial forces (then thereafter of the air forces) between 1789 and 1947. The department was integrated in the National Military Establishment the September 18th 1947 then current the Department of Defense the August 10th 1949.

The department of the War was directed by the Secretary of State of the War which was also member of the cabinet of the president of the United States. One indicated also the department by War Office (office of the War).

When it was integrated within the National Military Establishment , the department of the War was famous in department of the Army what did of him one of the three military departments of the federal government responsible for the US Army. At the same time, the air force was separated from the remainder of the army and became U.S. Air Force under the control of the department of the Air Force.
