Department of health of the sailors

The French service of health of the sailors is of an autonomous service of Occupational medicine pertaining to the administration of the sea and organized with the profit of the marine professionals of fishing and trade.

It consists of Médecin S and Infirmier S.

The centers are established in the districts of the maritime businesses.

Missions of the service

  • To determine according to the rules (stopped of the Minister for transport) the physical capacity for the navigation of the potential candidates, and the persistence of the aptitude in the course of career.
  • To take part in the annual visits of safety of the ships (lawful medical equipment/general hygiene of the buildings) like at the commissions of safety.
  • To follow the evolutions of this specific work, and particularly its consequences in the field of health and the industrial accidents.
  • To control on an annual base the health of the sailors and to confirm or not their aptitude for navigation, and to provide for the sailors the function of company doctor.
  • the department of health of the sailors organizes an annual conference: the days of the medicine of the sailors (JMGM), the 12th edition takes place in 2007. The debates advance the protection of the sailors on their work place.

Actions

The doctor as well as the male nurse also take part in the teaching of the medical matters in the maritime colleges like in the National schools of the merchant navy.
