The department of Madriz (in Spanish: be Departamento de Madriz ) is one of the 15 departments Nicaragua. It extends on: 1602 km ² and have a population of: 133300 hab. (estimate 2005). Its capital is Somoto.

Geography

The department is bordering:

• in north, of the department of Nueva Segovia;
• in the east, of the department of Jinotega;
• in the south, of the department of Estelí;
• in south-west, of the department of Chinandega;
• in the west, of the republic of the Honduras.

The department is subdivided into 9 municipalities:

• Tired Sabanas
• Palacagüina
• San Jose de Cusmapa
• San Juan del Río Coconut
• San Lucas
• Somoto
• Telpaneca
• Totogalpa
• Yalagüina
