Department of General Alvear
General Alvear is a department of the south-east of the province of Mendoza in Argentine. Its chief town is General Alvear.
Situation
The department has a surface of 14.448 km ², that is to say about half of Belgium. The department counted 44.147 inhabitants in 2001. It is limited to north by the department of San Rafael, in the west by that of Malargüe. In the east it is next to the province of San Luis and with the south that of the Pampa.
Climate
The climate is moderate semi-arid with tendency to freshness. Precipitations annual averages are of 330 Misters, which is equivalent to a little more half of those which sprinkle a city like Paris. Finally the average of the days of clear time without clouds is of 166 per annum.-

Economy
The principal economic richness of the department is agriculture. Lately the breeding develops successfully, in spite of an even arid relatively dry climate. There are thirty thousand hectares irrigated in the department is 300 km ², thanks to water of the Río Atuel. This plays a big role in the development of all the branches of the agriculture of the south of the province of Mendoza, including the breeding.It is necessary to underline the good geographical location of the department to the intersection of the trunk roads 188 and 143, which give access easily various points of the country and also the international markets members of the MERCOSUR, in particular Brazil.
Tourism
Annually, is held in the capital the festival of the breeding of the arid regions ( Fiesta of Ganaderia of mow shingles aridas ). At the time of this festival one exposes and one sells the animals which developed in this zone.
Teaching
One of the principal educational centers for teenagers of the province is located in the department, " Escuela de Agricultura" " or school of agriculture. This establishment belongs to the National university of Cuyo, which celebrated on April 19th, 2006 its 52e birthday, to the service of education in the province. This school provides each year of very good professionals in viniviticulture.
