Department of Defense of the United States

The Department of Defense of the United States ( United States Department off Defense , DoD or DOD) is the ministry for the government of the the United States charged to order with the forces soldier S of the country, in time of war and times of peace.

Its director is called the Secrétaire with defense, and is belonged to the presidential cabinet. Its seat is with the Pentagone with Arlington, in Virginia, close to Washington D.C

This department was created by the fusion of the department of the Navy and the department of the War in 1947 pennies the presidency of Harry Truman.

The Department of Defense chapeaute today departments of the Navy (US Navy), of the army ( US Army ), of the air force ( USAF ) and of the marines (US Marine Body). It also has under its command the interarmée staff, the military commands, as well as the various agencies of defense, the such Missile Defense Agency which deals with the anti-missile shield.

History

A structure burst before the Second world war

Before the Second world war, the United States always refused to have a standing army and professional. The country thus mobilizes and demobilizes when the need is felt some.

In addition, the administration as the command are burst between the departments of the war and the marine both created in 1798.

The National Security Act of 1947 envisages the creation of an integrated administrative structure, gathering the three armies and the ministry for the war. This one is supplemented by a centralized military command: the Joint Chief off Staff' (JCS) .

In 1949, the Department of Defense is created. The post of secretary to defense equipped with real decisional and budgetary capacities leaves only one place symbolic system with the secretaries with the war and the navy. From the point of view of the operational command, the Chairman off the Joint Chief off Staff' must centralize the control of the operations. Its role will remain however marginal until in 1953, while that of the secretary to defense will take rise quickly.
