Department of Constantine

The department of Constantine was a French Département between 1848 and 1962.
Regarded as French province, Algeria was departmentalized on December 9th, 1848. The departments created on this date were it starting from the civil zones of the three beyliks of the State of recently conquered Algiers. Consequently, the town of Constantine was made prefecture of the department bearing its name, covering then all is Algeria. The other departments were the department of Algiers in the center of the country and the Département of Oran to the ouest.
The department of Constantine covered then 87.578 km ² for 6 sub-prefectures, Batna, Bône, Bougie, Guelma, Philippeville, Sétif.
It is only in the Années 1950 that the the Sahara was annexed in departmentalized Algeria, which explains why the department of Constantine limited itself to what is the North-East of Algeria today. However, the two Eastern territories of the south were, until January 10th, 1957 and the creation of the common organization of the Saharan areas, managed by the department of Constantine.
Reorganization and independence
August 7th, 1955, the department of Constantine is amputee of its oriental party, with the creation of the Département of Bône.
January 28th, 1956, an administrative reform aiming at taking account of the demographic strong growth that the country had known divides the department into three parts, which became on May 20th, 1957 the Département of Constantine, the Département of Sétif and the Département of Batna.
Tiny room to the area of Constantine and its coast, the new department of Constantine covered 19  then; 899 km ², were populated of 1.208.355 inhabitants, and had seven sub-prefectures, Ain Beida, Ain Me lila, Collo, Djidjelli, El-Milia, Mila, Philippeville. A last modification will make him temporarily lose the district of Djidjelli towards transitory a Département of Candle, March 17th 1958 with the November 7th 1959.
The department of Constantine is maintained after the independence of Algeria, and becomes the Wilaya de Constantine by the ordinance of 1968.
