Chalatenango is a department, located at the North-West of the El Salvador. Its capital is Chalatenango.

The ruins of Las Matras contain traces of the populations and caves of the prehistoric time in which one finds inscription mural. Chalatenango acquired the statute of department February 14th 1855.

One finds in the department, the hydroelectric Stopping " of November 5th " , close to the border with Cabañas.

The culminating point of the country, El Pital (2 730,06 m), is located in the department of Chalatenango.
