Deogratias de Carthage

Deogratias is a bishop of Carthage sanctified middle of the 5th century.

Identity of Deogratias

It is not established if the Deogratias bishop is the same person as the Carthaginian deacon to which addresses the cathecumenis of Augustin d' Hippone into 400. Victor de Vita points out his great age.

Nomination with the episcopal see of Carthage

Whereas the episcopal see of Carthage, capital of the province proconsulaire of Africa, was vacant since 439, the emperor Valentinien III pressed Genséric to name a bishop there. The king vandal chooses in 454 the Deogratias priest, who profited from the favors of the local Christian communities.

Work in favor of the Roman prisoners
