Denys Puech
Denys Puech (Gavernac commune of Bozouls, December 3rd 1854 - Rodez, December 1942) is a Sculpteur French. Resulting from a family of farmers, it begins like apprentice in the craftsman monumental mason François Mahoux in Rodez. In 1872, after two years of formation, it continues its training with Paris at François Jouffroy then at Alexandre Falguière and Henri Chapu, while following courses of the evening to the Art schools.
In 1881, it obtains its first success with the 2nd Grand Prix of Rome for Tyrtée singing Messéniennes . In 1883, it records a new success with the 2nd Grand Prix of Rome for Diagoras dying of joy by learning the triumph from his two victorious children to the Olympic Games . In 1884, he is finally prize winner of the Grand Prix of Rome for wounded Mezence .
Consequently, it carries out many official orders with the length of the Third Republic. It carves, amongst other things, the busts of Jules Ferry (1895), Holy-Beuve (1898), Emile Loubet (1901) and Mussolini (1925). In all, 573 works are listed.
He is elected member of the Académie of the Art schools in 1905. He is named Chevalier of the Légion of honor on January 17th, 1908. He occupies the position of director of the Villa Médicis of 1921 to 1933.
He marries on May 13rd, 1908 the princess Anina Gagarine Stourdza (June 1st, 1865 - April 14th, 1918), artist-painter. He is the brother of Louis Puech, Député of the Seine of 1898 to 1932, public Minister for Labor from November 3rd, 1910 to February 27th, 1911.
He founds in Rodez in 1903 a museum of the Art schools. The building, inaugurated in 1910, is designed in dialog with the Boyer architect to emphasize its sculptures.
