Denney

Denney is a common French, located in the department of the Territoire of Belfort and the area Franche-Comté. It is administratively attached to the Canton of Fountain of which it is distant of 7km.

The village is located near the trunk road N83 at 5km of the center of Belfort, at an altitude of approximately 365 meters. The territory of the commune extends on 348 hectares. In 1803 the population was of 225 inhabitants, with the census of 1999 it was of 637 inhabitants. The proximity of Belfort is the cause of this strong increase.

The oldest mention of the village in the files goes back to 1344. In 1347, Thiengen , name germanized of Denney (one meets also Duringen ), forms already part of the parish of Phaffans and the seigniory of Belfort. A few years later the village joined the county of Ferrette and becomes Austrian field when Albert of Austria repurchases with his Ursule sister-in-law the share inherited their mother, Jeanne of Montbeliard.
