Denis of Paris

Holy Denis ( Dionysius ), come from Italy towards 250 or 270 after J. - C. with six companions for évangéliser the France, would have been the first bishop of Paris (Lutèce), the apostle of Gaules. He would be the uncle of Saint Pancrace (or: Pancrace of Rome).

Saint Denis founded several churches in France, and was martyrisé with Rustique and Éleuthère, his/her companions, towards 272, during the persecution of Valérien. It is, according to the ones, with Montmartre ( Mons Martyrum ) or on the island of the City, according to the others with the place where the town of St-Denis rises today, which they were put at death.

According to the Lives of saint Denis , written at the time Carolingian, decapitated, Denis would have gone towards north during six kilometers, its head under the arm, beam Montmartre by the way which will be named Rue of the Martyrs. At the end of its way, it gave its head to a pious woman originating in the Roman and named nobility Catulla, then collapsed. One buries it at this precise place and one built there a basilica in his honor. The city is called now Saint-Denis.

The tradition little by little made grow the fame of Denis which then was confused with Denys Aréopagite (bishop of Athens) and Denis the Mystic. This tradition goes back to the abbot Suger at the 12th century, which while having made manufacture forgeries, for political reasons, made accroire that holy Denis had been able to attend the sermons of holy Paul.
