Denis Villeneuve (born with Three-Rivers on October 3rd, 1967) is a Scénariste and a Réalisateur Québécois.

Biography

Denis Villeneuve was born in Gentilly, close to Three-Rivers, in 1967. After collegial studies in pure sciences, it is registered in communications with the Université from Quebec in Montreal and chooses specialization in cinema. It made there the training of all the trades of the cinema, but settles quickly at the station of realizer.

After having gained the first price of the Race Europe-Asia 1990-91 of Radio-Canada where it realizes more than twenty reports, it cumulates very diverse experiments. It carries out a short film of fiction entitled REW FFWD produces by the National office of film of Canada, selected in ten international festivals and prize winner of the special price of the jury to the Festival of Locarno. It also publishes in the Editions of the Hexagon an impressionist notebook of voyage entitled Voyage in Jamaica of a diver to the helmet which flees per hundred pitch-stirrers of depth .

It carries out many videos clip, among which Ensorcelée of Daniel Bélanger which gains the Felix of the best video clip of the year to the Official reception of the AA4, Querer of the Cirque of the Sun which receives three prices, of which that of the Canadian video clip most innovating visually in Much Music Awards 1995, and Quite simply jealous of Beau Dommage which gains the price of the best Canadian French-speaking video clip in Much Music Awards 1996.

In 1996, it scénarise and carries out one of the segments of collective film Cosmos , selected with the Quinzaine the realizers to the Cannes festival 1997 and member elect of the international prize of the cinemas of art and test.

In 1998, it signs the scenario and the realization of its first feature-length film, One August 32 on Earth , presented in more thirty-five international festivals. The film forms in particular part of the official selections of Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and of the FCMM, and gains gold Bayard of best film to the International festival of French-speaking film of Namur. One August 32 on Earth is also retained to represent Canada with the Oscars 1999 in the category “Better film in foreign language”, then is distributed in several European countries.

In 2000, he writes and carries out its second feature-length film, Maelström , selected by forty festivals, of which those of Sundance and Toronto. The film collects more than twenty-five prices throughout the world, among which the Price of International Criticism (FISPRECI) to the Festival of Berlin in 2001, the Prix SACD for the best scenario, as well as the Prix Genius of best film of the year in Toronto. Maelström represents in its turn Canada with the Oscars, then is distributed in Europe, in the United States and Japan. In addition, the film reveals with the public the actress Marie-Josée Croze, who will gain thereafter the Price of interpretation in Cannes in 2003 for the cruel Invasions .

After only two feature-length films, Denis Villeneuve was established like a esthète new cinema of international author. Its work lets foresee a single and poetic universe, near to the surrealism, in which evolve/move of the complex characters, varied and deeply human. Its control of the camera, of the play of the actors, the rate/rhythm of the account and the assembly gives rise to artistically rich films.

He works at present with a bearing film on the slaughter of the Polytechnic school, to Montreal on December 6th, 1989, just as with the film adaptation of the part to success of Wajdi Mouawad, Incendies .
