Denis Calvaert

Denis Calvaert or Denys Calvaert (1540 - 1619) Flemish, known painter also under the name of Denis the Fleming , born with Antwerp

It went in Italy, opened with Bologna a school, from which left, inter alia famous painters, the Guide, Albane and Dominiquin, and died in this city in 1619.

Its most remarkable works are seen with Bologna, with Rome, Reggio: one admires especially his S. Michel and a Purgatoire (in Bologna).

Its tables were engraved by Aegidius Sadeler and Annibale Carracci. Calvaert exerted the happiest influence on the development of the school lombarde and prepared that of the Carrache.
