Den Norske Turistforening
The Den norske turistforening (DNT) or the Norwegian Federation of the alpine clubs and mountain is the largest Norwegian organization of the activities of outdoor and of the country holidays It aims at promoting not mechanized activities of mountain. The federation gathers 55 regional associations which in total count approximately 200.000 members and who have a considerable network of more than 430 huts through Norway.
History
Founded on January 21st, 1868 after an initiative of the consul Thomas Johannes Heftye and captain Hans Hagerup Krag. The goal was: “to facilitate and develop the tourist life in Norway”. The same year, DNT buys its first hut, Krokan close to the fall of Rjukan (Rjukanfossen).
Environment
The DNT militates for protection of nature. It particularly defends the right to nature, a basic right for the federation. It is for a strict regulation against all forms of sports motorized in wild nature.
Huts
Regional associations have a network of more than 430 huts through the country. They are on the coast, in the forests or in particular with the mountain. The size varies between small refuges which have only some beds, to large “hotels” which can almost place 200 people. There are three categories of refuges:- not kept (ubetjent): Refuges not kept and without food. Carrying, one normally finds there a gas in self-service and ustensils.
- self-service (selvbetjent): Not kept refuges, nevertheless, one finds there food which one can buy.
- kept (betjent): refuges which with regard to its service (and price) approach the hotels, all the same, their heart of refuge are normally not lost.
The refuges of self-services and not kept are in general open, but some are nevertheless closed with key, in particular those which are located close to a road. To obtain a key, it is necessary to leave a deposit at the DNT. Normally, there is an adjustable wrench which works in all the huts. In certain places, it is also possible to buy the key in a service station, a kiosk, or in a sport store.
In the refuges of self-service, one finds a part where food is kept. It should be counted the things that one takes there and to add it to the invoice which one pay either with bank card or in parts.
Activities
The foundation proposes a range of sports activities, in particular rambles in summer or with ski in winter season.
