Structure of the population

Historical evolution

Whereas France counted already nearly 25 million inhabitants in 1750, at that time Great Britain counted some more than three times less. Throughout the pérode going from 1750 to 1900, Great Britain knew an intense increase in population which enabled him to catch up with then to exceed the France, in spite of an important emigration in its citizens. During first half of the XXe century, the persistence of a low birthrate in France added in the important losses with the First World War, made that the population of the the United Kingdom exceeds that of France, of close 20% the shortly after the Second world war.

The following figures relate to only the current extent of the United Kingdom, other than the territory of the republic of Ireland become independent at the XXe century. Being given that the population of the latter was evaluated to 2 million inhabitants in 1750, the population of Great Britain of the time, in her borders of then, was of 9,5 million inhabitants.

Comparison France-Kingdom-Plain

immigration in the United Kingdom, with the image of the whole of Europe known as of the fifteen, is definitely higher than immigration in France. Indeed according to French INSEE, during the three years going from January 2001 in January 2004 the population of the Metropolitan France had grown of 1.057.000 inhabitants, of which 678.000 (64%) were due to the natural increase, and only 379.500 (36%) with immigration.
