Demography of the Territory of Belfort

Evolution of the population of the Territory of Belfort

The graph below watch for the two last centuries four principal phases:

  • 1800-1870: slow increase in population due to the economic development of the area and the relatively strong birthrate. As from 1851 an cholera epidemic and the economic crisis curbs this regular increase.
  • 1871-1914: The arrival the many Alsatian ones fleeing the germanisation and the establishment of large factories (mechanical engineering, textile industry…) support the development of the agglomeration belfortaine.
  • 1914-1945: the two wars are accompanied by a clear reduction by the number of inhabitants and a stagnation between the two wars.
  • 1945-1999: The dynamism of big industries attracts workers of all Is France, until in the Eighties.

The total data of population are based on the various censuses, carried out with variable periods between 5 and 35 years. The time scale is thus not linear. Over the period 1803 to 1871, one cumulated the number of inhabitants of each of common constituting the current department.

The town of Belfort (reference mark B) constitutes, since more than one century, an essential centralizing pole. The population of Belfort reaches a maximum with 50000 inhabitants approximately. The small belt of the city strongly developed since about thirty years and it is now in a ray of about fifteen kilometers around Belfort that inhabitants of the city in the search of a better framework of life settle.
