Demography of the Rhone-Alps
The Rhone-Alps is the second most populated area France, with 5.645.407 inhabitants in 1999, that is to say a progression of 0,6% per annum over the period 1990 - 1999. At the first January 2006, its population was estimated at 6.005.000 inhabitants. Since the beginning of 2000, the population growth accelerated busy with 53.000 inhabitants per annum on average, that is to say an increase in 0,9%. This increase is due to 58%, with its natural surplus (2nd rank in metropolis after the Ile-de-France). 42 other % are related to a migratory surplus which tends to increase.
The pattern of the settlement on the territory is rather unequal. About half of the population in the 3 principal urban surfaces saw, while the southernmost departments are populated little, like the Ardèche. The regional population knows a rather constant evolution, except that of the department of the the Loire which saw its population appreciably decreasing between the two censuses of 1990 and 1999. Since this date the figure of its population seems stabilized and a shy person rectification is even started.
The inhabitants of the Rhone-Alps are the Rhônalpins.
Evolution of the population
History
After being characterized by a dynamism higher than that of France during first half of the XIXe century (more 40% in 50 years compared with + 15% for France), the demographic development of the area knows a complete stagnation lasting nearly one century. The top of 1901 will be the starting point of a succession of falls followed by light rises, so that in 1946, after the two world wars, the population is found almost on the same level as in 1851. But the tendency is reversed consequently, and the area becomes gradually one of most dynamic of the metropolis. In 1990, the population of the area thus progressed of almost 55% compared to the immediate post-war period. And the movement does not stop, as shows it the following table.
Recent years
Source: and.
Between 1990 and 2006, the population of the area still progresses of 660.000 inhabitants, that is to say more than 12%. Since 1999, the movement tends to develop. It is true that the Rhone-Alps is remarkably located in the Western part of the " banana bleue" European with the borders of Switzerland and Italy and constitutes a major crossroads between the road carrying out of the moist north of France, the United Kingdom and the Benelux countries towards the south of Europe (Italy and Catalogne especially), and that which goes since Germany and the center of Europe towards the Iberian peninsula and North Africa. This position of all large European crossroads is underlined by the density of the highway network around Lyon, and many the lines of produced TGV or in project, centered on the capital of the area.
Births and death by department
The following figures are provided by INSEE - -.
With a birth total in 2006 in rise of 2 083 units (more than 2,5%) compared to the previous year, the Rhone-Alps area has confirmed a demographic dynamism noted for several decades. As comparison, let us stress that since 2005, the number of births of the area is definitely higher than that of the close Suisse (72 903 births in 2005 for 7 400 000 inhabitants), and exceeded in 2005 that of the Austria however populated of more than 8 200 000 inhabitants (78 190 births in 2005). For the birthrate point of view of, it is also necessary to underline to it extremely beautiful service of Ardeche (more 7,5% in 2005 and more 2% in 2006, are nearly 10% in two years).
If one considers the progress observed between 2000 and 2006, in fact the Isere (more 7%), Ain and the Rhone (more 8%) post the most notable progressions.
Fruitfulness by department
In 2003, the median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness was following it for each department and the whole of the area:
As well the unit area as the department of the Rhone, by far more populated, have a fertility rate slightly higher than that of France. The whole of the table is extremely beautiful, and the services poor of Savoy and mitigated of Isere make there a little spot. The weight of Isere is sufficient to prevent the unit from seriously exceeding the French average. It is necessary to notice high rates of the Drome, the Loire and Ardeche which make from now on started from a " ruban" resident of the Rhone of high fruitfulness, as well as the high figure of Ain and Haute-Savoie. Following the rise of fruitfulness in France since the year 2000, it is not excluded that these departments reach soon the threshold of replacement of the generations (2,07-2,08 children by woman).
On the whole one can say that the Rhone-Alps area made actuellementt part of the French areas to higher fruitfulness, which was not the case historically.

Immigrants and foreigners
By immigrant one understands somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can be become French by acquisition or have kept his foreign nationality. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France. The children of foreign couples born in France are foreign but become French with their majority, if they do not wish to preserve their nationality of origin. However, as of the 13 years age, the parents can ask for French nationality for their child, with his agreement (under condition of having resided five years in France). Moreover minor the 16 year old accomplished can make the request for anticipated acquisition of nationality without the agreement of his/her parents.
