At the first January 2005, the Haute-Loire was populated of 217  263 inhabitants, in rise of 1  265 people compared to the previous year. In 10 years, from 1995 to 2005, the increase in population is assembled to more 10  700 inhabitants.

A little history

The origin of the inhabitants of the Haute-Loire is very diversified. These hard inhospitable mountains were used during the Préhistoire to only make it possible to the nomads to forward south towards north. The first settlements are Celtic:

After the defeat of Vercingetorix to Alésia the “romanisation” of the Gaulle does not escape this area. The first cruel people to settle are the Visigoths and the Burgonde S. The Norman S and the Francs settled there around centuries 8 and 9. buckwheats of the the Maghreb and Spain settled there in the neighborhoods of the years 775.

A department become gravitational

The Haute-Loire is the gravitational department auvergnat today. Since the end of the year 1970, there are more people come to settle in this department that people having left it. Since 1999, this migratory surplus strongly progressed. From 1999 to 2005, the annual surplus of the entries on the departures is estimated at more than 1.300 people, that is to say the double of what had been noted between 1990 and 1999. The apparent balance of the entries and exits east of 0,65% annually, which is a rather important rate. This recent evolution places the Haute-Loire at the 36ème row of the 96 metropolitan departments, in terms of demographic attractivity.

That places the Haute-Loire on the same level as the departments of Vaucluse or Drome, and well before the Puy-de-Dôme (+ 0,36%) or the Cantal (+ 0,32%).

A fertile department

Many arrivals of young couples these last years, and the maintenance of a high fertility rate are the ideal engine for the demographic revival from now on significant. Fertility rate was estimated at 1,98 child per woman in 2004, well above the metropolitan national average (1,92 in 2005). After the strong fall recorded between 1985 and 1993, the number of births post a progression more important than the French average.
