Demography of the Alpes-Maritimes

The inhabitants of the the Alpes-Maritimes are the '' Azuréens ''. (some would wish the use of the " term; Maralpins" largely rejected by the local population)

More the big city: Nice.

When Nice became French in 1860, it passed from fourth city of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia to the 44ème place of the French Empire to which it was annexed.

The department of the Alpes-Maritimes then counted less 200  000 inhabitants. But the cities developed along the coast and the population increased regularly, more and more quickly, exceeding 300  000 at the beginning of the XXe century, 400  000 in the Years 1920, 500  000 in the Years 1930. After losses due to the Second world war, the growth began again and the population doubled in second half of the XXe century, exceeding from now on a million inhabitants. Nice is today the fifth town of France in terms of population behind Paris, Marseilles, Lyon and Toulouse. However one can note a deceleration of this growth since the end of the Années 1980, because of the ageing of the population. The department indeed attracts much from fortunate abroad (Dutch, Italian, Britanniques….) and elderly who wish to benefit from the pleasant climate for their retirement, and from now on the deaths are more numerous than the births. The population thus does not increase any more but thanks to its positive migratory balance. In addition, these old immigrants, in general fortunate, do not hesitate to put amazing sums in the acquisition of their housing, thus exposing the active population to an unbearable increase to get a roof, thus causing an exodus or an impoverishment of the active and producing part of the population.

This strong growth, primarily urban, led to the formation of a vast coastal conurbation including Cannes, Grasse, Nice, Menton, and gathering more than 90% of the total population. The remainder of the department remained little populated and changed much less.

The census of 2005 estimates the population of the Alps Maritimes at 1.064.000 inhabitants.
