Demography of Togo

Population

The Togo account 5.556.812 inhabitants (figure of 2004), with one distribution of 49,3% men against 50,7% women. The Middle Age is there 17,6 years (17,2 years for men, 17,9 years for the women).

The life expectancy in Togo evolves/moves between 50 and 60 years, but it is in drop since the beginning of the Nineties (and this until in 2010 according to estimates). This fall must partly with the expansion of the Virus of AIDS.

  • Rate of elimination of illiteracy (at the most 15 years): 60,9% can read and write, with 75,4% at the men and 46,9% among women (estimates of 2003)

Ethnic origins

The very great majority of the inhabitants (99%) is African of birth. The remainder comes from Europe, Syria or the Lebanon.
