Migrations and ethnic composition

The census makes it possible to establish the ethnic distribution of the country: 79% of the South-Africans are black, 9,6% white, 8,9% coloureds, 2,5% Asian. The Indians concentrate primarily in theNative one.

After the end of the Apartheid, South Africa started to accommodate refugees coming from other African countries, often clandestine. The government set up a strict policy with respect to illegal immigration: a million people were renewed at the border in the years 1990.

White emigration

In October 2006, the South-African Institute of the Racial Relations (SAIRR) revealed that nearly a million white South-Africans, representing a quarter of the White, the country had left since 1994 and the advent of a nonracial Démocratie.

Based on an analysis of the Statistical Surveys of the Households of South Africa, the author of the report/ratio, Frans Cronjé, foot-note that the primary reasons of this strong white emigration resulted from the high rate of Criminalité and of the policy of Positive discrimination (affirmative action).

The figures for 2005 place the number of white South-Africans in the country at 4,3 million, that is to say: 841000 less than the 5,2 million 1995.

The majority of the white emigrants being people economically productive, Cronjé predicted that this emigration was going to have an major impact on the economy. “The white population ages, which means that the white taxpayers will contribute to the economy only for the twenty next years. One would need an enormous surge of skilled workers to fill the vacuum. That is unfortunately not the case. ”

According to the report/ratio, the majority of these emigrants are old between 20 and 40 years.

The decline of the white population in the decade 1995-2005 is thus estimated at 16,1%.
