Structure of the population

The population of the Guyana is estimated at 199.500 people in July 2006 in strong growth, since it was only of 157.000 people in 1999 (115.000 in 1990 (600.000 according to a high assumption), at the same time thanks to a strong rate of natural growth (surplus of the births on the deaths) and under the effect of the immigration of the countries bordering attracted by the Or, a advanced health system, schools, a advanced welfare state, and wages higher.

The index of Guianese fruitfulness was in 2003 of 4,0 children by woman, last figure known for the department, and was estimated by the CIA at 2,98 children for 2006, which appears extremely improbable even whimsical, since fruitfulness increased there by 1999 to 2003, and that the fruitfulness of the whole of France and the DOM posted a broad increase in 2003 to 2006.

It should be noted that Guyana is today of all the countries of America (Northern, Southern and Central) that of which fertility rate the most is raised, before Guatemala and Honduras.

Density

Population density is weak (1,88 hab/km ², except with Cayenne which reaches 1745 hab/km ²), but if account is held owing to the fact that the population is distributed on the littoral, that is to say on only 10% of the territory, the density " effective" is closer to: 19 inhabitants with the km ².

; paradoxical Records :

  • Maripasoula is the most extended commune of France (18.761 km ² for 3.710 inhabitants), Regina the second (11.470 km ² for 765 inhabitants) and Camopi third (10.454 km ² for 1032 inhabitants), to compare with the 105 km ² of Paris.
  • paradoxically, Cayenne which shelters the most inhabitants, is the smallest commune of Guyana in surface.

Migration and cultural composition

Usual origins of the populations

Information on the usual origins of the populations of Guyana is rather incomplete since the French Republic not recognizing neither race, nor colors, this information is estimated by foreign organizations and are not the subject of census.

  • Amerindian : they would represent a little less than 12% of the population.
