The population is to 85% of Spanish or Latin-American origin; thousands of Indians remain only in the South.

The indigenous population represents today less than 29.000 people, that is to say less than 1% of the population. The descendants of the immigrant workmen jamaïcains of the XIXe century constitute an anglophone minority accounting for 3% of the population (96 000 people). An important ethnicity in growth in the Costa Rica is formed by of Nicaraguens who accounts for 10% of the population. The majority of these immigrants of the Nicaragua consists of refugees of the Sandiniste mode which existed in Nicaragua and they work now as worker manuals. Racism towards Nicaraguens is common and their position in the company is simlaire with the Mexicains within the the United States.

Many immigrants German, Polish, Italian and Jewish left a long descent within the country, but today, they are especially Amerindian people which migrate towards Costa Rica to occupy of seasonal employment. Moreover, one growing number of Colombian, Panamanian and Peruvian refugees regard Costa Rica as their house, because this country is an example of hospitality and peaceful government within the Latin America. Many States-Uniens come to live their retirement also there.
