Demography of Burgundy

The settlement of the Burgundy not very dense and is unequally distributed. The population concentrates on the axes of communication whereas the Morvan is emptied. Burgundy is currently populated than it was it in 1851. The area counted 1.624.000 inhabitants in 2006.

Since 1990, demographic imbalance was accentuated between the dominant Burgundy and areas which frame it (Île-de-France and the Rhone-Alps). With these two strong growths, Burgundy opposes only one stagnation. Annual migratory balance passed only from -0,03% to -0,04% between the last 2 censuses but the annual natural surplus fell from 0,13 to 0,04%. That represented an ageing of the population, the area attracts the pensioners indeed more the young couples.

Evolution of the population

Sources: INSEE, and IAURIF.

Since 1982, Coast-in Or and Yonne gained some 40  respectively; 000 and 30  000 inhabitants. On the other hand Nievre continued its long decrease, and the Saône-et-Loire suffered much. On the whole years 1990 were hard for Burgundian demography. Since 1995 however, the area profits from a weak increase of its population.

Births, death and natural balance

Provided figures by INSEE -.

Coast-at Or, young and relatively fertile department is the only one to post a natural balance (relatively important) positive. Nievre on the other hand, victim of the exodus of most of its youth is depopulated naturally following an important negative natural balance. The two other departments show a balance between births and death.

Fruitfulness by department

The median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness evolved/moved as follows for each department and the whole of the area:

The fruitfulness of the women of the area rather poor is compared with the average of the metropolis. It loses an even little ground vis-a-vis the latter. The systematic against-performance of Coast-in Or draws the area to the bottom, in spite of the robust figures of the Saône-et-Loire and especially of Yonne (except 2003).

As for Nievre which had historically undergone an important emigration of young people, it posts a poor score and thus cumulates the factors of depopulation, which it has undergone for more than 150 years. However, by examining the figures, one notes certainly a reversal of the migratory, light, but real situation. Thus in the year 1999, the department posted a natural deficit (birth-death) of -829 people, whereas its population lost nothing any more but 517 inhabitants, which implied this year a positive apparent migratory balance of some 300 migrants. The same applies to later years. But that must be confirmed by the figures to come.

Immigrants and foreigners

By immigrant one understands somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can be become French by acquisition or have kept his foreign nationality. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France. Let us recall that the newborns in France of foreign parents are foreign, but become French full at 18 years, if they reside there and resided at it in a continuous or discontinuous way during five years since age the 11 years and if they do not wish to preserve their nationality of origin. However, as of the 13 years age, the parents can ask for French nationality for their child, with his agreement (under condition of having resided five years in France since the 8 years age). Moreover minor the 16 year old accomplished can make the request for acquisition anticipated of nationality without the agreement of his/her parents and under the same conditions of duration of residence in France during five years since the 11 years age.

Figures of INSEE for the year 2004:

Since 1982 and especially 1990, the number from abroad dropped and also aged much. It thus passed from 84  000 with 63  800 in 1999. On the whole 65  000 foreigners had 1  054 children in 2004. What gave a birth rate of 16,2 ‰. Conversely, 1  555  000 French of the area had had the same year 16  732 children, corresponding to a birth rate of 10,8 ‰. The difference between these two figures is due on the one hand to the greatest number of foreign women from 20 to 40 years, and on the other hand with a fruitfulness of the foreign women more important. To note that for the whole of the Metropolitan France, birth rate within the foreign population was higher (26,2 ‰), which results above all from a composition by age and different nationality.

One notices that on 1  054 births of foreign mothers, 455 (that is to say 43,2%) are Maghrebian. The births of Italian and especially Spanish mother fell to almost nothing, and their weight is negligible. It is regrettable that INSEE does not inform us yet on the births of Turkish mothers and Black Africa, whose weight is largely higher.

Finally the births out-marriage which constitute more than 50% for the French mothers, are much fewer at the foreign ones (20%). They are even fewer at the Maghrebian ones, particularly Tunisian, phenomenon noticed elsewhere in France and in particular in Île-de-France.

Marriages

In 2004, one recorded 6.060 marriages in Burgundy, of which:

  • 5.380 between two joint French
  • 67 between foreign couple
  • 256 mixed marriages between French husband and foreign wife
  • 357 mixed marriages between French wife and foreign husband

The foreign population very few seems to be melted gradually in the mass of the population bourguignone, since on 747 joint foreigners implied in the total of the marriages, 613 (that is to say nearly 82%) were it in mixed marriages (against 71% for the foreign population of the whole of the metropolis).

Ventilation of the mixed marriages

Source: .

The mixed marriages French-foreigners are important to observe. It is indeed about one of the principal indicators of integration of the foreign populations, with the number of acquisitions of nationality.

Though these statistics of INSEE in general occult three quarters of the mixed marriages, and 85% of the mixed marriages whose husband is French, it will be noted that the group of the Algerians is implied in 75 mixed marriages (more than 12% of the latter), whereas the Italians, of which the number is comparable, are more present only in 6 of these marriages (less than 1%).

Principal urban surfaces

The following populations refer to the urban surfaces in their extension defined at the time of the census of 1999.
