Demography of Basse-Normandie

At January 1st, 2006, the number of inhabitants of the area of Basse-Normandie was estimated at 1.449.000 inhabitants is 2,2% of the population of the Metropolitan France, against 1.422.000 with the census of 1999. The area is in 17th position within the 22 areas of Metropolitan France. Basse-Normandie thus gained nearly 27.000 inhabitants is 3.850 inhabitants per annum on average.

The demographic growth rate of the area is modest (+ 0,27% per annum since 1999). It is almost completely due to the natural balance (+ 0,26% per annum), migratory balance being very slightly positive (+ 0,01% annually).

Age distribution

Less than 20 years are numerous in Basse-Normandie, area which is always rather fertile. On the chart opposite, one notices that the young people are very numerous in the neighborhoods of the Caen city (except for the city itself), like in the north-western part of Cotentin, around Cherbourg.
