Demography of Austria

A preliminary estimate of the Austrian population on 01-10-2006, gave a report on 8  292  322 inhabitants. Austria on the whole posts a growth of more than 280  000 people since the end of December 2000, and knew an appreciable population growth thus. The growth was of 53  200 inhabitants in 2005. The average rate of 0,66% observed in 2004-2005 was five times superior at the rate extremely low posted in the middle of the years 1990, sign which Austria entered once more during a time of accelerated increase in population, and this following the example its neighbors Switzerland and Italy.

Evolution of the population

Shifts in population

It results from this table that Austria posts a growth of more than 280  000 residents enters at the end of December 2000 and at the end of September 2006, which is an appreciable population growth.

These last decades, Austria is characterized by a succession of periods of demographic strong growth, alternating with periods of fort low growth, even of reduction. The beginning of XXIe century seems to be able to be defined as period of growth accelerated, at least since 2003. In the middle of the years 1990 indeed, the average annual increase hardly exceeded 10  000 inhabitants, and at the time of preceding demographic vagueness (in 1989-1993), the rate had amounted to 0,9%. During this five years period (89-93), after fifteen years of stagnation, the population had increased 334  400 inhabitants, and had passed from 7  594  300 with 7  928  700. However these figures should not make illusion. Like all its neighbors, the country forms actually part of the group of country of Europe central-Southerner to Fertility rate very low (1,41% in 2005, one happy new year however, against 1,92 in France), and the Net reproduction rate is only of 0,68%. The surplus of the births is very weak (of -1000 with + 5  000 people these last years) and entirely due to the foreign births. The totality of the increase in population noted is thus due to the immigration, without which the population would decrease each year. On 78  000 births in 2005,9  167 were of foreign nationality, and much more still by counting the births related to foreign and immigrant parents naturalized. The flow of clear immigration exceeded 50  000 people in 2004 as in 2005, is proportionally nearly three times more than in France.

It should be noted that the level of acquisitions of Austrian nationality is raised, especially in the young people and reached close to 35  000 foreigners in 2005, after years 2003 and 2004 records (44  694 and 41  645).

Evolution of Länder

The following figures are calculated at June 30th of each year:

In fact the Western länder progress clearly more (Vorarlberg, the Tyrol and Salzburg), which is explained by their proximity with Switzerland, the collar of Brenner and the great economic centers of the south of Germany and the north of Italy (Munich, Milan). Contrary, the areas of the south-east of the country (Carinthie, Styrie and Burgenland) turned towards the less developed areas of Hungary and Balkans, miss dynamism extremely. The länder of Low-Austria and High-Austria show an average dynamism. As for Vienna, the capital, which progresses regularly, it constitutes a case with share thanks to its national and international functions. One must stress that its demography takes again finally colors. The city had 2  indeed; 239  000 inhabitants in 1916, and had not ceased since then being atrophied.

Foreigners in Austria

The distribution of the foreign residents in different the länder Austrian arised as follows, at the end of 2004 and at the end of 2005:

In spite of the arrival of the extreme right-hand side to capacity (FPÖ then BZÖ) since the end of the year 1990, immigration goes better than ever to Austria.

More than 70% from abroad are originating in countries different from Europe from the 25. The number from abroad progressed in one year of 25  456 units of which close to 16  000 only in Vienna. But the real flow of the migrants is more important, because 34.876 foreigners acquired Austrian nationality during this year, reducing of as much the number of foreign residents. The exact value of migratory balance is worth: difference between the number from abroad 2004 and 2005, plus naturalized, the deaths from abroad, less the foreign births. What makes 50  255 people, is 6,12 per thousand, and correpondrait in France, all things considered, with a migratory balance of more or less 370  000 immigrants.

Acquisitions of Austrian nationality

Source:

More than 80% of acquisitions are due to the Turks, with the ex-Yugoslavians with the Roumanians and the Poles. There are very little citizens of the Western-European countries which choose to become Austrian, and in particular very little of Germans or Swiss. To note the importance of naturalizations within the nationals of the countries of Asia (inter alia China, India, Philippines) and of the Egyptians.

On the whole the rate of acquisition of Austrian nationality is high these last years, proportionally more or less the double of that recorded in France.
