Demography of Aquitaine
At January 1st 2006, the number of inhabitants of the Aquitaine region was estimated at 3 099 000 inhabitants, is 5,1% of the population of the Metropolitan France. The demographic growth rate of the area is rather important these last years (+ 0,92% per annum since 1999). It is above all due to migratory balance (+ 0,85% per annum), the natural balance being historically very weak (0,07% annually).

Fruitfulness by department
The median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness evolved/moved as follows for each department and the whole of the area:
Following the example other areas of the south-western quarter of France, Aquitaine belongs to the zone posting an important weakness of fruitfulness.
Evolution of fruitfulness these last decades
In the years 1960, the Aquitaine formed already part of the French areas with low fruitfulness, just as the whole of the areas of the center and the south of the country, including the Ile-de-France. At that time the zone of high French fruitfulness formed vast growing called " growing fertile" who left Poitou (the Vendée) to the west and went up in direction of the Picardy and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais while going along the Manche, thus including/understanding the Brittany, the Pays of the Loire and the Normandy. Then this crescent curved towards south-east, including the Champagne-Ardenne, the Lorraine and the Franche-Comté, by circumventing the Île-de-France by north.
Since then a general phenomenon of homogenization of fruitfulness in the various areas of metropolis took place which contributed to bring the rate closer to the south-western areas of the national average. Fruitfulness dropped less where it was weak but extremely dropped where it was raised, and overall, the difference between the most fertile areas and least fertile was strongly reduced of this fact.
But the Aquitaine region preserved a rather important negative variation with the French average. Recently, as in the whole of France, it climbed a little since the end of the year 1990 without managing until now to approach the national average.
Foreign immigration
-
Note:
- By immigrant one hears somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can be become French by acquisition or have kept his foreign nationality. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France. Let us recall that the newborns in France of foreign parents are foreign, but become French full at 18 years, if they reside there and resided at it in a continuous or discontinuous way during five years since age the 11 years and if they do not wish to preserve their nationality of origin. However, as of the 13 years age, the parents can ask for French nationality for their child, with his agreement (under condition of having resided five years in France since the 8 years age). Moreover minor the 16 year old accomplished can make the request for acquisition anticipated of nationality without the agreement of his/her parents and under the same conditions of duration of residence in France during five years since the 11 years age.
Many foreigners and of immigrants in Aquitaine region
With the census of 1999, the foreigners and the immigrants divided themselves as follows in France and Aquitaine region:

Cut families - Many children
-
Note: Households and families
-
Household: Together occupants of the same housing, whatever the bonds which link them. There can not be no family ties between them. A household can be reduced to only one person.
-
Family: It is a whole of at least two people of the same household, made up
- - either of a married couple or not, and, possibly of his/her unmarried children without child
- - or of a relative with his children (single-parent family).
- - either of a married couple or not, and, possibly of his/her unmarried children without child
-
a household can comprise several families, as it is the case at many farmers.
- the members of a household not belonging to a family are called " people isolées" or " isolés" very short.
Percentage of the families in 1999, according to the number of children of less than 25 years living under their roof:
Not only the Aquitanian families are fewer than the average of the French families, but the immigrant families of Aquitaine are definitely fewer than the average of the immigrant families of the metropolis. This is in relation to the importance of the number of Spanish and Italian families within Aquitanian immigration, often made up families rather old people, and, concerning young people, generally not very fertile.
Distribution of the births by nationality of the mother
The following figures are provided by INSEE for the year 2004 :
With more 1 900 births on close to 32 700 (6%), the foreign births constitute a part definitely less significant in Aquitaine than in the worldwide. The births of Maghrebian mother constitute more than 35% of these births, which is equivalent with the percentage raised in Ile-de-France and as a whole of the metropolis. The 18 births of Italian mother are almost negligible (less than 1 ‰ of the unit) and show that the relative demographic weight of the very old Italian immigration is from now on unimportant. It will be soon the same birthrate of Spanish (- of 3 ‰ of the births of the area), in spite of an always active immigration in the area.
The births except marriage are definitely majority, especially at the French women. It does not go from there in the same way to foreign, in particular Maghrebian ones, and especially the Morrocan women and the Tunisian ones.
Interregional immigration
Principal urban surfaces
The population of the principal urban surfaces is in clear expansion, especially those which are located on the littoral (Arcachon, Bayonne) or which has a harbor vocation. The attraction of the Atlantic littoral is reinforced everywhere these last decades, of Brittany in the Pyrenees.
The following figures of population correspond to the urban surfaces in their extension defined at the time of the census of 1999 -.
The promotion of Bordeaux as Métropole of balance is without question strong a great success. The city should exceed the million inhabitants before the year 2010. But one should not underestimate remarkable advanced urban surfaces of Bayonne and Pau, become both of important and prestigious urban centres. To as underline the good services of Agen, Dax and of Mount-of-Marsan, thus besides as that of Périgueux which grows from now on within the framework of a the Dordogne expanding demographic.
The small urban surfaces have however evil to develop (Villeneuve-on-the-Batch, Marmande, Oloron-Holy-Marie, Libourne).
It also should be stressed that the rural areas in Aquitaine are much more important than on average in France (30,1% of the population reside at it against 15% for the whole of the Metropolis).
