Demasduit

Demasduit was an indigenous Béothuk captured in 1819 with its baby by a team directed by John Peyton Jr. To take it alive, however, one had killed her husband and his brother. The child died two days later.

It was taken along to St John' S, where his portrait was made and it was renamed Mary March, since it had been captured in March. One taught him the English and it delivered some interesting information on its nation. Two forwardings were then organized to try to find other members of its people so that it turns over among them, carrying peace overtures. But the contact never took place. A deserted camping well was found, but “Mary” categorically refused to be abandoned there by the White. January 8th of the following year, the young woman died of “consumption”, i.e. probably of a Tuberculose contracted in contact with her geôliers.
