Delta of Paraná

The delta of Paraná , in Argentinian, is the interior Delta Rio Paraná. It is born with the height from the port from Diamante, in the province of Between Ríos. One divides it into three great areas: the higher delta (since Set with diamonds, until Villa Constitución in the province of Santa Fe), the average delta (since Constitución Villa until Ibicuy in the province of Between Ríos) and the lower delta or in formation (since Ibicuy to the mouth in the Río of Plata).

In 1992 the National park Predelta was created to 5 km of the town of Diamante. It has 2.458 hectares.

General information

The overall length of the delta is approximately 320 km, and its width of 10-15 km at the beginning goes up to 60 km. It carts 200 million tons of sediments (of which the half comes from Río Bermejo via the Río Paraguay). It progresses annually in Río of Plata from 50 to 90 meters, according to various sources.

The lower delta was the place of the first modern establishments in the basin of Paraná-Plata, and it densément is densément populated today. It is the agricultural and industrial center of the Argentine and shelters several major seaports. The principal course of Paraná is south-western side of the delta, and is navigable until Puerto General San Martín by boats going until the type Panamax.

Principal arms of the delta

Among the principal arms, it is necessary to mention Paraná Pavón, Paraná Ibicuy, Paraná of mow Palmas, Paraná Guazú, and the least important Paraná Miní and Paraná Bravo.

Parana Pavón is the first major branch to be detached from the principal course. It has a tortuous course which begins from the east coast opposite Villa Constitución. Between principal Paraná (south-western of the delta) and Paraná Pavón are the Lechiguanas islands. Paraná Pavón runs towards the east then turns to the south where it is continued by Ibicuy, which itself gives rise to small Río Paranacito, a tributary of Uruguay which passes by Villa Paranacito.

The Paraná of mow Palmas starts around the place of the mouth of Paraná Ibicuy, downstream from Baradero, running initially towards the west in the province of Buenos Aires then turning again towards south-east. It will be used as south-western limit with the delta. Principal Paraná located more at the North-East, is continued consequently by the second major branch, the Paraná Guazú . In its turn this last generates two branches running towards the east in territory among Ríos: Paraná Cheer initially, then Paraná Miní.

So that on arrival in Río of Plata, we have four connect important; maybe of the east-north-east towards the west-south-west, the Cheer, Miní, Paraná Guazú and Paraná of mow Palmas. This last being closest to Buenos Aires.

Ecology

The easily flooded plain of the river belongs to the écorégion of the delta of Paraná and the islands. The original ecosystem, especially in the lower delta, extremely was modified by deforestation, hunting, the fishing and the introduction of foreign species, and was damaged by industrial and different pollution. It lodges species like the Cerf of the marshes, the Capybara, the otter of river, the Chat of the pampas, the Jaguar, and the coypu, some in danger.

Protected areas

The National park Predelta, created in 1992, protects a sample from the delta superior. He is located at the south-west of the province among Ríos, to 6 km in the south of Set with diamonds, and has a small surface of 24,58 km ², occupied by low islands prone to the floods, and lagoons and arms of the river.

The Reserve of biosphere of the Delta of Paraná, located in the jurisdiction of San Fernando (in the north of Buenos Aires), was created to protect and study the ecosystems and to promote economically and ecologically the activities known as bearable. It has an extent of 886 km ², of which 106 km ² are the core.
