Delta Forces
The “ Delta Forces ” (having carried names of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Airborne) SFOD-D (A) and Combat Applications Group within the Department of Defense of the United States) is a unit of the American Special forces belonging to the US Army and depend on the Special Joint Operations Command . One of its principal natures is the secrecy which surrounds it, which explains the little of information available on the unit. Indeed, the continuous American army to maintain it in the secrecy although its existence is currently indisputable, and refuses to deliver any information about it.
Creation
The “delta Forces” was created in November 1977 like antiterrorist unit , to be able to face the rise of the Terrorisme attacking the American interests apart from the American territory. Its creator is the colonel Charles “Chargin' Charlie” Beckwith, who had been liaison officer near the 22 SAS '' Regiment '' in 1962 - 1963, with the result that the “Delta Forces” with its creation was very inspired by SAS, as its structure in shows it will rather squadrons than in companies , or the selection of the recruits with a Hills Phase (phase of the hills)…The “delta Forces” with also profited from the councils of Major Richard Meadows (old beret green in Vietnam, one of the originators of the Opération Kingpin on the prison Its Tay, and infiltrated in Iran at the time of the Opération Eagle Claw), as well as foreign units, of which British SAS, GIGN French and German GSG-9. At the time of the phase of operational qualification of the unit, the commander Christian Prouteau, creator and ordering GIGN, the colonel Ulrich Wegener, creator and ordering GSG-9 and the general to sir Peter of Billière, ordering 22 SAS and creator of the formation to the urban combat of SAS (from where is resulting the antiterrorist formation from the CRW when SAS see itself allotting this mission in the Années 1970) were invited to validate the unit as experts.
This design did not achieve the unanimity among other members of SOF, so much so that at the beginning of the Années 1980 the 5th '' Special Forces Group '' created an entity specialized in antiterrorism called Blue Light. It is difficult to know if the motivations of the executives of the green berets having founded Blue Light came truly from a design different from the ideal antiterrorist unit or if they felt their own unit threatened by creation of the “Delta Forces”. It is supposed that this unit was dissolved when the “Delta Force” became operational.
Another unit with the similar prerogatives was created in October 1980 shortly after the failure of the Opération Eagle Claw which aimed at releasing the hostages retained in the American embassy of Iran: the SEAL TEAM Six (called DEVGRU thereafter) of the US Navy.
Missions
The initial role of the “Delta Force” was the counter-terrorism, in priority to protect or help the American citizens and interests abroad. For exceptional cases, it can intervene on the American territory, in particular in collaboration with the Hostage Rescue TEAM of FBI.However, the unit is capable of extremely various operations. It can be charged to ensure the protection of American military high ranking authorities (even allied in certain cases) in time of war or of tensions, of various special operations (recognitions and raids behind of the enemy lines), like exempting specific trainings with foreign units.
This diversity, as well as the possibility left with the American special forces act as civilian, makes that it can be difficult to determine if an operation is spring of the “Delta Forces”, of the Special Forces or of the service of clandestine operations of the CIA.
Organization
The organization of the “Delta Force” is - as the remainder - secret. It seems that he preserved the structure into three will squadrons (has, B and C) which Beckwith with its creation had founded, subdivided to them-even in a certain number of troops . It seems that each troop specializes in a tactical speciality: fall operational, diving or other.According to certain more recent information, the unit would include/understand also a group of support of transmissions, a group called “ Funny Platoon ” because including/understanding female elements (of which the role unknown, is supposed to deal with the clandestine operations) and an air detachment with planes and helicopters painted in colors of false companies civil independent of the other special forces (can be resulting from the unit Seaspray) although the Delta operators also work with the 160th SOAR (A).
It counts according to the sources of 800 with 2 000 people and is stationed with Fort Bragg (North Carolina).
