Initially described by Gray like a species with whole share, the dolphin common to long nozzle was then compared to a subspecies of the common Dauphin ( Delphinus delphis capensis ) because of the strong morphological resemblance between the two animals. A study DNA carried out in 1995 made it possible to differentiate it from the dolphin common to short nozzle. This same study highlighted the difference of the dolphin common present at sea Rouge ( Delphinus tropicalis ).
