Delfzijl is a city and a commune of the Netherlands, in the province of Groningue. With: 28000 inhabitants, it is the larger fourth ville. In 1990, the municipality amalgamated with the municipalities of Termunten and Bierum.
In the Fifties, one made harbor projects, because it was thought that Delfzijl would be the alternate port with the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Bremen. This project was a great failure. The infrastructure is from now on bad and the companies were not interested.
The bad position of Delfzijl created a very unstable political climate. In 2003, the municipal team was beaten. In 2004, took place a Référendum to elect mayor (normally, the mayor is named by the queen). The candidates (two women) made a very intensive campaign, but the confidence of the inhabitants was not large. Only 35% voted and the socialist candidate was elected with 64% of the votes.
In Delfzijl, there are not highways, only one trunk road. One can travel by train to Groningue twice per hour from two stations downtown.
