Delft is a provincial town Dutchwoman of Holland-Southerner ( Zuid-Holland ). It is located between $the Hague ( Den Haag ) and Rotterdam, very close to $the Hague and on the Canal to the Rhine in Schie and the Schie. The commune of Delft counts 95.817 inhabitants (2004).
The name comes from “ delven ” which wants to say “to dig” in reference to the oldest channel of the city, of oude Delft . Delft is a city of more than 750 years and it obtains its establisheds among of the count Guillaume II of Holland in 1246.
In 1572, William of Orange settles in Delft. He is the principal figure of the revolt against the Spain which leads to the independence of the United Provinces (which include/understand the Netherlands current but also the essence of the Belgium), which is worth to him the nickname of “father of the fatherland” ( vader of the vaderlands ). William of Orange is assassinated in 1584 in Delft and is buried in the nieuwe kerk (new church). Its descendants (of which the current sovereigns of the Netherlands) are done burying in Delft since then.
Delft was also one of the seats of the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Eastern Indies (created in 1602) which held the monopoly of the trade between Asia and the United Provinces. This trade is at the origin of the manufacture of porcelain in the city.
Nowadays, Delft is profiled like a coed city. The University of technology of Delft ( Technische Universiteit Delft or YOU Delft) is very famous, as well in the Netherlands as abroad. With his 13.000 students, YOU became a pillar of the knowledge (at the technological level) in the Netherlands. The national research institute (TNO) has also laboratories in Delft and works on certain fields narrowly with the polytechnic school.
The town of Delft is known in whole Europe for its Porcelaine. Tens of manufacturers at the 17th century does not remain any more but only one sign.
The University of technology of Delft is there.
