Delfshavense Schie

The Delfshavense Schie is a channel Dutch of the Holland-Southerner.

Geography

Delfshavense Schie is entirely located on the territory of the commune of Rotterdam. It connects the Schie to Overschie (more precisely, the crossing of the four Schies) with the Nouvelle Meuse with Delfshaven.

History

In 1389, the town of Delft was seen granting by the count Albert Ier de Hainaut the rights to dig a channel of connection between Schie and Merwede (today the Nouvelle Meuse). To the place where this channel crossed the Schielands Hoge Zeedijk and where the channel was thrown in Merwede, Delft could found its clean port, called Delfshaven.

The primary reason of the wish of the town of Delft to have its own connection by inland waterway, was that she did not want to be dependant on Rotterdam or of Schiedam for its trade and thus of its connection with Merwede. Before the construction of Delfshavense Schie, the boats coming from Delft was obligatorily to pass by the Rotterdamse Schie or the Schiedamse Schie.

In 1933, one carried out a new connection between Delfshavense Schie and the Nouvelle Meuse, by the Coolhaven and the locks Parksluizen . Historical connection through the old center of Delfshaven was stopped during the closing of the lock Ruigeplaatsluis .

Current location

Nowadays, Delfshavense Schie is most important inland waterway between the Delftse Schie and the Nouvelle Meuse. The Rotterdamse Schie was filled mainly; the Schiedamse Schie is hardly used by the professional conveyers.

In the industrial park of Spaanse Polder, one created several wearing of garage in the Années 1940. These wearing of garage are hardly used: the companies of Spaanse Polder are supplied primarily by the road.

Delfshavense Schie also plays a big role in the drainage of the areas of Schieland and Delfland.
