Dekaranger ( Tokusou Sentai Deka Renja ) is a Televised series Japan ease of the kind Sentai in 50 episodes 25 minutes, created in 2004 and diffused exclusively in Japan. It however was the subject of a “American reassembly” in order to be diffused on the Western market under the name of Power Rangers, Special Organizes Delta , with heavy modifications on the level of the scenario and characters…

Synopsis

In an unspecified future, the extraterrestrial became a reality. Moreover, they resemble to us much: some are honest citizens, whereas others are dangerous criminals. And just like in Men in Black , they more or less go incognito among us.

In answer to the recrudescence of the extraterrestrial activity on our planet and beyond, a body of police force highly specialized was created by the galactic authorities, with an aim of controlling and of neutralizing any form of organized crime which could be discovered: this police force, which gathers warriors of elite originating in the four corners of space, bears the name of Special Organizes Dekaranger .

The series concentrates in particular on the land department of the SPD, where five young combatants ensure the safety of our Planet under the orders of Anubinoïde Doggy Kruger. The threats to which all must face are multiple: psychopathes extraterrestrial, trade unions of the crime, not very scrupulous caïds of the underworld galactic, and in particular the Abrella agent, a being particularly crafty one and dangerous around of which a good part of the criminal activity revolves…

Characters

• Banban “Round of applause” Agasa/Dekared : leader of the section of Dekarangers. It was transferred on Earth after having bâclé a mission on a remote planet. Round of applause is enthusiast of justice, impetuous and sometimes frankly unconscious. His/her colleagues have first of all evil to accept its arrival, but recognize its qualities of gunner quickly.

• Houji “Hoji” Tomasu/Dekablue : undoubtedly the most serious member of the team. Hoji is a confirmed agent and a frightening combatant. It is devoted body and heart with the cause of the SPD and does not tolerate the errors, which they come from itself or someone else. Its character calms and made up causes him sometimes some rows with Ban, of which it does not support impetuosity, but both remain despite everything good friends at the time of the engagements. Its name is a pun with the Bancha Hojicha.

• Sen' ichi “SEN-chan” Enari/Dekagreen : SEN-chan is the thinking head of the group and its capacities of reflection often lead to the solution of a seemingly inextricable problem. It calm, is posed, sure of him, and an eccentric tantinet (see in particular its “reflexive installation” which consists in making the pear tree against a wall to clear up the ideas…), which does not want to say that it is able than the others in combat, far from there…

• Marika “Jasmine” Reimon/Dekayellow : it is oldest of the two female members of the section, and also calmest and introverted. Jasmine with the advantage of having extrasensory faculties, which enable him to see events related to a person or an object, while coming into physical contact with them. She suffered from her difference during her adolescence, before Doggy Kruger does not take it under its protection. Besides she wears gloves in the civil life, to avoid using her capacity involuntarily.

• Koume “Umeko” Kodou/Dekapink : Umeko is young person and most dynamic of the team, which often makes it catalyst of a good portion of the humor of the series. It is also most emotive, and does not support to see somebody suffering. Its natural kindness can give again cohesion with the team in the worst situations. She is also a specialist in the disguise, and can easily endorse the appearance of no matter whom.

• Tekkan “Tetsu” Aira/Dekabreak : This to arrange elite joined the team later during the series, to face Hell Siblings, a group of extraterrestrial powerful which already devastated many worlds. First of all scornful vis-a-vis the group of Dekarangers, it will end up going down from its pedestal and will gain in modesty. It seems to have weak for Jasmine and sees in Umeko a little sister.

• Doggy “Boss” Kruger/Dekamaster : This Anubinoïde de Sirius is the officer as a chief of the land department of the SPD and the commander of Dekabase. Doggy is the only not-human member of the team: it is about a massive humanoïde with head of Chacal, which raises a superb blue fur. It is a wise and understanding mentor, who hides a large heart under a cold and severe attitude with the first access. His/her colleagues adore it… Its function is not limited however to order. Indeed, Doggy Kruger is also one of the most powerful warriors of the Galaxie, and in the cases of major force, he does not hesitate to endorse his armor to assist Dekarangers over the battle field, under the name of Dekamaster . Its relation with its Swan assistant is not official, but it is clear that it likes it much…

• Swan “Swan-san” Shiratori : this young woman is the scientific officer of Dekabase, in charge of the maintenance of the arsenal and the vehicles of Dekarangers. Just like Doggy, with which it maintains a cordial friendship, Swan is extraterrestrial and comes from the Cygno planet, although it has a human appearance. On the occasion, it joined it also Dekarangers on the battle field, under the appearance of Dekaswan .

• Murphy K-9 : this Dog - Robot is used by Dekarangers to track the extraterrestrial criminals and to discover dissimulated objects. It is also able to modify its configuration, to become a powerful gun called D-Bazooka , generally used to carry the fatal blow to an enemy found guilty. Murphy seems equipped with a certain personality, and shows sometimes espieglery when it raises the back leg to sprinkle the feet of Doggy Kruger of a small fluid flush of cooling! Its name is a double homage to Alex Murphy, hero of the film Robocop , like in K-9 (to pronounce in fact “Canine”), the cybernetic dog of Doctor Who .

Technology

Arsenal

• SP-ARM : this apparatus is at the same time the license and the activator of transformation of any Dekaranger. It has three principal functions:

Exchange Mode: this function activated vocally by shouting “Emergency, Dekaranger! ” allows arranging to endorse its armor of combat instantaneously. The vocal signal is immediately sent to Dekabase, which sends a flood of particles of Dekametal, left intelligent material of high technology, around the body of arranging, thus forming its armor in a few nanoseconds (it should be noted that a similar process is evoked in the series X-But , for the famous sequence of transmutation of the hero).

Phon Mode: this operating process is that of a banal communicator long-range and also makes it possible to identify possible extraterrestrial having taken human form. The licenses of Dekayellow and Dekapink have also an additional function, enabling them either to create a cell of dimensional detention (for Dekayellow), or to change instantaneously physical appearance and of appropriate dress (for Dekapink).

Judgment Mode: this option is activated right before carrying the blow of thanks to an adversary. By activating it, one to arrange is able to call upon the Ultimate Court, kind of entity cosmic residing at the limits of the Galaxie, and whose role is to decide innocence or culpability of the suspect. A green round comes down clearing it, whereas a Red Cross orders its immediate destruction.

• SP-Shooter : this revolver is the regular weapon all to arrange except situation of combat, each one in door with its belt.

• D-Knuckle : arms with contact to the free handling, which consists of a reinforced American fist able to increase the deterrent force of its user.

• D-Rod : arms with contact inspired by Jitte (arms Japanese traditional). Dekablue and Dekagreen use one of them and can combine it with their D-Knucles respective to have access to a more powerful weapon of shooting: D-Blaster (Dekagreen) or D-Sniper (Dekablue)

• D-Stick : arms with contact similar to a rapière or a foil, used by Dekayellow and Dekapink. Once combined with D-Knuckle, it forms a weapon of shooting called D-Shot. The handle of the D-Stick also comprises a detachable bomb, which can be launched against the adversary.

• D-Magnum 01 and D-Magnum 02 : twin revolvers of Round of applause, which can draw separately or to be combined in only one weapon devastator called Hybrid Magnum.

• D-Sword Vega : personal sword of Doggy Kruger/Dekamaster. Once activated, its blade, seemingly aged, changes color and becomes étincelante. Between the hands of somebody of as tested as Dekamaster, it constitutes a frightening weapon.

• Brace Throttle : gantelet carried by Tetsu/Dekabreak, which is at the same time its license of Dekaranger of elite, and its principal weapon; in combat, this apparatus is able to take care of various kinds of energy, increasing thus considerably the deterrent force of Dekabreak.

Later in the series, the 5 Dekaranger principal will have access, after a drive, with a mode of more advanced combat called Swat Mode , which increases the power of their armours and them forunit of new weapons.

Vehicles

When they are in “civil” costume, Dekarangers use vehicles of patrol:

• Machine Doberman pinscher : convey used by Dekared and Dekayellow which can reach a top speed of 500 km/h.

• Machine Husky : motor bike used by Dekablue, being able to roll to 300 km/h.

• Machine Bull : convey used by Dekagreen and Dekapink, being able to reach a speed of 350 km/h.

• Machine Boxer : futuristic motor bike with only one wheel, controlled about the middle of the series by Dekabreak.

• SP Helicopter : helicopter of patrol controlled by Dekamaster (only seen in film).

Matched

• Dekamachines : these five vehicles are launched since Dekabase when extraterrestrial particularly tough is warned to be transformed suddenly into giant or when a giant robot makes its appearance.

• PatStriker : police car with six wheels, controlled by Dekared, and provided with extensible arms able to handle heavy objects. Form the head and the chest of Dekaranger Robo.

• PatGyrer : gyrocoptère controlled by Dekablue, armed with the gun Vulcan Gyro, and able to block the adversary. Form the left leg of Dekaranger Robo.

• PatTrailer : conveying armoured tank controlled by Dekagreen, armed with the Canon Signal. Form the right leg of Dekaranger Robo.

• PatArmor : armor-plated hovercraft controlled by Dekayellow, provided with the gun Light Flash able to plug the enemy. Form the right-hand man of Dekaranger Robo.

• PatSigner : convey of patrol controlled by Dekapink and equipped with a version giant of the scanner in mode Jugement , able to determine the innocence or the culpability of an adversary. Form the left arm of Dekaranger Robo.

• Dekaranger Robo : giant robot resulting from the assembly of the five Dekamachines. It is 45 meters high for 4.600 tons, and is armed with the Canon Signal and the sword Judgment Sword. Later, the combination with sixth Dekamachine, Dekabike (controlled by Dekabreak), will give access to a mode of more advanced combat called Super Dekaranger Robo.

• Dekabike/Dekabike Robo : giant hovercraft in the shape of motor bike controlled by Dekabreak, also able to change into robot. In its shape of vehicle, Dekabike is used as means of transport in Dekaranger Robo, and can also combine with him to increase its power.

• Dekabase : general headquarter of Dekarangers on Earth, under the command of Doggy Kruger. The five Dekamachines are stored inside this gigantic metal fortress. In addition to its improved defense systems, Dekabase is able to modify its configuration, to become Dekabase Crawler, an enormous armored vehicle, or Dekabase Robo, an immense giant robot twice larger than Dekaranger Robot and containing an incredible firepower.

• Dekawing Robo : last giant robot of the series to be born, thanks to work of Swan, in parallel with the access to the mode of combat SWAT. It is about a formed robot of five small flying vehicles, specialized in the aerial combat; Dekawing Robo appears indeed at the same time as a new generation of enemy robots advanced and in particular able to fly.

Comments

This series is the 28e series super Sentai to have been born in the Japanese archipelago, more than thirty years after Himitsu Sentai Goranger (first super-sentai in the world, going back to 1975). With recurring codes and assumed naivety which make from now on integral part of its charm, the kind became a true tradition in Japan. Although the superone to date preserved a good number of its traditional “receipts” at the level of the special effects (use of models and actors in costumes), he however was not unaware of the development of virtual new technologies, which allow from now on often astonishing scenes of combat. And Dekaranger is an good example. But even traditional fakings, them also, considerably progressed. One is forced to incline itself in front of the beauty of certain costumes (the character of Doggy Kruger, in particular, is very successful) and the design, always very exuberant, of the extraterrestrial creatures.

Also let us note that, for reasons of scenaristic coherence, the original character of Doggy Kruger underwent a " relooking" in the americanized version of Dekaranger (Power To arrange SPD); originally played by an actor in costume of fur in the pure style “sentai”, the American version of the character is out of latex and holds more of the Animatronique, with a larger pallet of facial expressions, but however also a less successful esthetics.
