Deflate is an algorithm of Data compression without losses which couples the algorithm LZ77 and the Codage of Huffman. It was defined at the origin by Phil Katz for version 2 of its archivor PKZIP, and was later defined in RFC 1951.

Deflate is subjected to no patent, which led to its use in the formats Gzip and png, in addition to the format zip to which it was with the dedicated departure, at the time where the patent on the algorithm LZW (used in the format GIF) had not expired yet.

The source code of Deflate can be found in Zlib.

AdvanceCOMP uses an implementation of Deflate which authorizes a recompression of the formats Gzip, png, MNG and ZIP.
