Defense and illustration of the French language
Defense and illustration of the French language ( Deffence, and Illustration of the Language Francoyse in the original orthography) is a literary Manifeste, writing in 1549 by the Poète French Joachim of Bellay, which gathers the ideas of the poets of the Pléiade.
Context of writing
The text, plea in favor of the language French E, appears ten years after the Ordonnance of Villers-Cotterêts which imposes French like language of the Droit and of the French Administration. Of Bellay shows its recognition towards François Ier, “our fire good King and father”, for the role that this one played in arts and the culture: creation of the Collège de France, outline of the national library with the Registration of copyright. Of Bellay wants to make “barbarian and vulgar” French language an elegant and worthy language. It will be necessary for him to enrich it with his comrades by the Pléiade to make of it a language of reference and Enseignement.
