Deemster

A deemster (of the old English deman , “judgment”) is a Juge on the island of Man. The high court of the island of Man is chaired by a deemster or a judge of call. The deemsters have in particular the responsibility to promulgate the laws at the time of the Tynwald Day by reading them with crowd, at the same time in English and Mannois, the local language. Before 1980, the deemsters sat at the Legislative council of the archipelago.
There exist only three deemsters or judges full-time on Man:
- the first deemster ( First Deemster and Clerk off the Rolls ), which is also appointed lieutenant-governor,
- the second deemster ( Second Deemster ),
- the deputy deemster ( Deputy Deemster ).
When vacancy ago of the function of lieutenant-governor of the island of Man, the first deemster occupies this function temporarily.
