A decree (of the Latin decretum , “decision”) is a legislative Norme.
Within the meaning of the canonical right
In the History of the canonical right, the term “decree” indicated a collection of legislative texts of the Church (pontifical decisions, conciliar decrees ):
- Decree of Burchard de Worms;
- '' Décret '' of Gratien.
The importance of the decree of Gratien quickly made decree a synonym of “canonical right”. The expression “faculty of decree” then indicated the faculties specialized in canonical right, that of “Faculty of Law” being restricted to those which taught the Roman law.
