Decorative Plant

A decorative plant is a Plante cultivated for its qualities Ornement ales, rather than for its commercial value or economic. They are generally cultivated in outside (in the Jardin S public or deprived and the parks), but also in interior (house plants).

The culture of the decorative plants is very old and goes back to the most moved back times, the man having always sought to embellish and to return more accessible sound tallies of life.

Generally, the decorative plants are cultivated for their Fleur S, however, their qualities of ornament can be related to other characteristics, such as for example the color and the aspect of the foliage or the bark, their port (tree, climbing plant, bush,…) who can be modified by the size, in particular in the case of the topiary Art, or by the conditions of cultures (Bonsaï), but also the fruits, the stems, the perfume which they release… In certain cases, it can be a question of a strange nature, such as for example the prominent spine S and somewhat assassinate Rosa sericea F. pteracantha .

The decorative plants can belong to various categories according to the required effect and the site in which one wishes to make them push. They can be plants herbaceous, annual, bi-annual or long-lived, of woody plants, trees, shrubs shrubs. They can be cultivated in open ground, in greenhouse or wintergarden, or out of pots. In all the cases, it is the approval of the gardeners and the visitors which is required. The decorative plants can also be cultivated with a landscape aim or for the cut Fleur.

Certain plants become decorative only under the effect of a particular action of the gardener. It is the case for example shrubs cultivated for art Topiaire which would lose their decorative character in the absence of regular sizes. It is the same of graminaceous with Gazon which must be frequently mowed.

The ornamental plants and trees are distinguished from the plants intended for an economic production, which are the object of the Agriculture or the Sylviculture. That does not prevent however that a particular species can be at the same time the object of a culture economic and appreciated in a garden for its decorative qualities. Thus, the Lavande is typically a decorative plant in the gardens, but can also be cultivated for the production of essential Huile of lavender.
